Early Readers/Chapter Books
Mystery books are a good way to introduce kids to chapter books. They often contain suspense, some illustrations and have clear structure to a plot. Character Themed Books
As with every holiday, there are many Halloween themed stories based on popular characters. Clifford, Sesame Street, SpongeBob - you can find a book based on most TV and well known characters.
This can be a great way to encourage sharing and reading of books, children will often be more likely to read books about characters they are familiar with.

The other great thing about many Halloween themed books is that they can be read all year round. The stories are generally enjoyable what ever time of year you read them. A good example of this is Room on a Broom by Julia Donaldson. Although the main character is a witch they story is not set at a specific time of year. The theme of the story is friendship and helping each other.
The story centers around a friendly witch who is always losing things. Creatures help her along her journey and she gives them a ride on her broom. The broom breaks, the friends save her from a dragon and she sets a spell to make them a new broom that caters for all the creatures.
The book appeals to readers because it if full of rhyme and repetition and is perfect for retelling. Children love to make up their own spells and design a boom that they would like!
Halloween is a perfect 'excuse' to share a book!
